Icons: Combat Arena has a very robust controller support, and it's very likely that you will be able to use whatever is most comfortable for you. Regardless of which controller you wish to use, make sure that if you choose to remap buttons to enter the settings menu with your controller. If you enter that menu with your keyboard or mouse, Icons will try to remap your keyboard buttons, so make sure you use your controller!
Xbox One Controller
This should be plug and play! Plug your Xbox One controller in with a Micro USB cable, and it should be completely ready to go. If you want to use your controller wirelessly, it should also work -- provided you have the corresponding wireless adapter from Microsoft.
Xbox 360 Controller
This should be plug-and-play! Just plug your controller into your computer and it should be usable immediately. If you want to use your controller wirelessly, it should also work -- provided you have the corresponding wireless adapter from Microsoft.
PS4 Controller (DualShock4)
Plug a Micro USB cable into your DualShock 4 controller and set your controller up through the Steam Controller Config window (Click on "Steam" in the top left, go to settings, Controllers, General Controller Settings, and toggle "PS4 Configuration Support")
Nintendo Switch Controller
Connect your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller through Bluetooth to your computer and set your controller up through the Steam Controller Config window (Click on "Steam" in the top left, go to settings, Controllers, General Controller Settings, and toggle "Switch Pro Configuration Support"). Then run Steam through Big Picture mode and start Icons: Combat Arena!
Nintendo Gamecube Controller
Third-party Adapter (such as Mayflash):
These are mostly plug-and-play! Make sure that you have your adapter in PC mode if there's a switch somewhere on it, and then your computer will read it just as any other controller and you should be good to play Icons!
Official Nintendo Wii U Adapter:
Download Massive's Gamecube Controller PC Adapter Driver and follow the guide listed on the website. Make sure you click "Display Install Instructions" for the complete walk-through. It's very important that you follow these steps very closely.
Restart your computer after the drivers have completed installing.
You should now have a program called "WiiU USB GCN Adapter"
After opening the program, select "Start" and the driver should display like this:
Once you receive the message "Driver successfully started, enter input loop." You can start Icons and test out your controller!
IMPORTANT: Make sure the GREY cable on your adapter is NOT plugged in. This is known to cause miscellaneous issues, which should be remedied by unplugging the grey cable.
Q: I have a Mayflash adapter that I set up for netplay, how can I use this in Icons? (Use this only if switching to PC mode on the Mayflash Adapter does not work natively)
A: If you followed a guide to set up a Mayflash adapter for Dolphin that involved Zadig, your computer treats the Mayflash like an official adapter.
Set it to Wii U mode like you would for Dolphin, and follow this guide. Skip the Zadig step. When the installer opens Zadig, simply close it and continue. Once finished, run GCNUSBFeeder.exe and keep it running while playing Icons. Alternatively, you can run your Mayflash adapter in PC mode (flip the switch on the back of your adapter) and it should work like any other plug-and-play controller.
Q: GCNUSBFeeder says GCN Adapter not detected
A: Make sure that GCNUSBFeeder is running as administrator and only the black cable of the adapter is plugged in. You should also close Dolphin if it is running as it will take priority over the adapter. You should see the below when it is running correctly.
Q: I have removed the springs from my Gamecube controller, will this work?
A: Currently springless triggers will exhibit some incorrect behaviour. We recommend using a Gamecube controller that still has springs or a different controller in the meantime.
Q: I’ve followed the above steps for setting up my controller but I’m still having problems, or only a few buttons work. What do I do?
A: Make sure Steam’s Generic Controller support is disabled (Unchecked). This can be found by going to Steam Settings -> Controller -> General Controller Settings
Q: Can I use a keyboard, hitbox or fightstick to play?
A: Yes! We want Icons to feel good playing with any controller. Let us know if you run into any issues with these.
Q: How can I change my controller binds?
A: Select Settings on the main menu using the controller you would like to configure
